When installing Activity Monitor Agent remotely on a default installation of Windows 8, 7 or Vista remote installer will return this error:

"Couldn't connect to \\REMOTE-PC\ADMIN$
Access is denied."

In order to install Agent remotely on a Windows Vista machine it is required to use Domain Administrator account since only these accounts have the necessary privileges to access the administrative share ADMIN$. Due to User Account Control (UAC) it is not possible to install remotely on Windows Vista machines using local accounts.

Other recommended way to install Activity Monitor Agent on a Windows Vista machine is to run installation locally.

  1. Go to the remote computer with Windows Vista
  2. Login to Windows as the user who is a member of Administrators group.
  3. Open amagent4.exe from a network share, flash drive or a CD. Follow easy instructions and install Agent on this computer. Amaget4.exe file can be found inside distributable file or in C:\Program Files\SoftActivity\Activity Monitor folder on your computer.
  4. Return to your computer with Activity Monitor installed. Newly installed Windows Vista PC should appear in the list in Activity Monitor. Double click to start monitoring

In order to install Agent on Windows Vista machines remotely using local administrative accounts it is necessary to disable UAC completely or disable UAC for remote operations only.
You can disable UAC (user account control) only for remote operations and allow all
Vista administrator accounts to use their administrative powers over the network. This can be done through the registry this way:

  1. Open Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> Regedit).
  2. Browse to:
  3. Create a new DWORD value:
  4. Set LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to 1

Then return to your computer with Activity Monitor installed and click Install Agent. Select Vista computer on your network, enter administrator’s user name and password for the Vista computer and click Install button.

After Agent is installed successfully it should appear in the list in Activity Monitor. If it does not appear click Add Agent and enter host name. Make sure that Agent and Activity Monitor are not blocked by firewalls or anti-spyware programs.
